Youth Rugby

Matt Hettermann

Ever Wonder

why so many young people have smiles on their faces every week? It’s because they play Rugby! We would like to see you with a smile on your face, so its time for you to join one of the fastest growing and most exciting sports in Northern California.

Lamorinda Rugby Football Club

(LAMO) has been active in rugby since 1983 and we continue to build on our long history of leadership. We are a member of the NCYRA (Northern California Youth Rugby Association), a youth rugby organization sanctioned and governed by USA Rugby, which is the National Governing Body of rugby in the USA. USA Rugby is a member of the US Olympic Committee and the International Rugby Board. We are one of the premier clubs in Northern California and have one of the largest Youth Rugby program in the country.

The Club

offers rugby for boys from 1st grade through 12th grade and the club is split in to Youth Rugby for the 1st through 8th grade players and High School Rugby for the 9th through 12th grade players. We begin with introductory touch and tackle rugby for junior youth (1st, through 6th grades) with abbreviated numbers, and developmental rugby for middle school students (7th and 8th grades) with the full 15-a-side game. All players are taught the fundamentals and laws of the game by experienced and certified coaches - the best part is that everybody gets to play irrespective of athletic ability. That’s the beauty of rugby: everybody gets to be an active

part of the team.

The Next Level

is the Freshman level, specifically designed for the transition from Youth Rugby to High School, where high school Freshmen round out their rugby playing skills and join the Junior Varsity team. The Varsity Team consists primarily of Juniors and Seniors, though some advanced Sophomores may play up.

Youth Rugby

is played in age groups and certain age groups have open and light weight divisions to make sure players of similar size play against each other. The cutoff date for being eligible to play in an age group is September 1, prior to the season starting. To play in the Under 10 age group, you will need to be 9 or under on September 1, prior to the start of the season. You may turn 10 during the season as long as you are under the age group division on September 1.

Under 8

You must be 7 or under on September 1

Under 10

You must be 9 or under on September 1

Under 12

You must be 11 or under on September 1

Middle School

You must be in 7th or 8th Grade only to play in this division.

Once you have registered you will receive an email from your coach or team parent via Team Snap with game and practice times/locations. You will receive weekly updates once the season starts. Expect to receive your first correspondence early December.

The Youth Rugby season runs from November through the end of March. We practice during the week and play games over the weekends.

All practices are run on the Wilder Fields ~ our home field.

Most games for the Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12 teams are on Sunday mornings. The Middle School team plays games on Sunday afternoon following the younger age groups.

Required Equipment or You Won't Play

Mouth-guard, Club reversible jersey, rugby shorts, club socks and cleats (soccer cleats work very well). It gets cold up on the field during practices, so dress in layers (t-shirt under jersey and a fleece to keep warm).
