Lamo Rugby 7's

High School 7's Report

A bit of history

Lamorinda RFC embarked on its first full Summer Sevens season in 2014 fielding a Varsity Silver Side that made it to the Semi-Final match of the NorCal Sevens Tournament. Building on the prior season’s success, Lamo grew it’s 7’s squad to two full teams participating in both JV Gold & Varsity Silver divisions at all six 2015 summer tournaments. Of note, the squad included players representing Eight regional High Schools ranging College Park and Clayton Valley to Acalanes/Miramonte/Campolindo to Fremont HS in Oakland. Lamorinda RFC provided several young athletes access to competition that they otherwise would not have been able to participate in. Returning Head Coach, Mark Bass had much stronger breadth of athletes to work with in 2015 and he achieved fantastic results.

The Junior Varsity side competed extremely well all season long, enduring long days in NorCal Valley heat and tough matches against the region’s premier sides. Although they did not come away from the season with any hardware, they developed a strong foundation for further growth next season and continued to show the grit, determination and camaraderie that will serve them well through their rugby careers.

The Varsity Silver side was a dominant force to be reckoned with every time they took the pitch. Featuring a mix of ruggers from many schools & 15s programs, they quickly coalesced as a team and racked up several tournament wins throughout the sevens season including the 2015 NorCal Summer Sevens Varsity Silver Championship in Dixon in late July.  The team featured several graduated seniors who are now pursing their rugby careers collegiately at the University of Arizona, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Diego State & Chico State.  The summer sevens season was a phenomenal way for this fine young men to wrap up their High School rugby careers while setting a standard of achievement for next year’s Varsity squad.

The 2015 Summer Sevens season for Lamorinda RFC proved to be a challenging yet successful campaign. The club looks forward to continued growth of the sevens program and stronger participation and performance as we embark on our next rugby season.
